Brief Introduction and Vision

The Department of Linguistics inherited from NEHU, re-established in 2012 at Kohima Campus, Meriema. It was a non-teaching department during the time of NEHU, however, Nagaland University made it into an academic Department to provide regular teaching and research programme facility. Along with the two-year post-graduate masters degree course and research programmes, the Department has one-year post-graduate diploma in Linguistics(PGDL) which is meant to train the native speakers who are employed in various Institutions as Language Officers, Language Teachers, Interpreters, Translators etc.

Naga languages under 'endangered list.' The Department envisions capacity-building to scholars of native speakers of all Naga linguistic communities towards developing respective language and literature. The aim is also to preserve and promote all living languages of the Nagas through Research Activities, Workshops, Seminars etc.

Highlight of Research Activities and Thrust Areas

Keeping in view the immediate needs of the people, the Department enrolls Research Scholars for the doctoral degree who are attempting to study the language structure, language teaching and sociolinguistic dfields. Other branches of Linguistics-typological, historical, psycholinguistics, translation, comparative study, computational, lexicography-will also be equally facilitated. It is expected that culture and practices of the Nagas will simultaneosly be saved in the midst of the modern fast-changing world.

Research-based dissertation has been adopted at the Masters Degree level compulsorily. The present thrust is attending on Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Sociolinguistics and Lexicography by the final semester students with priority to Eastern Nagaland tribes such as Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam and Yimchunger.
