About the Department
Tenyidie is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Bodo-Naga sub-group. It is a language spoken by the Tenyimia group of Nagas which comprises of Angami, Chakesang, Rengma, Pochury, Zeliangrong, Maram, Thangal and Inpui tribes. The Department of Tenyidie under Nagaland University was started in the year 1997. It has a two-year Post Graduate course, Ph.D. programme and offers 6 months Certificate Course in Tenyidie, 1 year PG Diploma Course in Tenyidie, 3 months Tenyidie Diploma Course for International Students and 1-month Crash Course in Spoken Tenyidie.
The M.A. Tenyidie course is comprised of 50% Tenyidie Literature, 25% English Literature, and 25% Linguistics. English Literature and Linguistics is introduced in Tenyidie M.A to support its growth, progression and expansion. The course incorporates compulsory research work in the form of dissertation writing. Producing stellar quality Ph.D work encompassing literature, culture, linguistics and other relevant topics is a primary pursuit of the Department.
The Department through its research component of activities, strives to document languages, and authenticate every aspect of Naga ancestral life in general, and that of the Tenyimia group in particular. Simultaneously, the Department endeavours to address quality education through the promotion of Tenyidie. The Department gives due importance to language analysis, and to churn out critical spirit in the students and promote creative writing skills in various genres of literature. Translation is also a major academic activity of the Department.
